Jill Scott's mother Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on April 4, 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Her grandmother raised her and she was an only child. Scott attended Philadelphia High School for Girls. Following graduating, Scott enrolled into Temple University. She completed her secondary education the course of two years while also working. She wanted to be a high-school English teacher. The dream of becoming a high-school English teacher, ended when she dropped out of school. She began her career as a spoken word artist performing her own pieces at live poetry readings and eventually linked up to Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. They were able to collaborate in writing You Got Me. Through the Roots show, she revealed herself as an artist. Then she secured collaborations which included Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. She also gained experience in performing in the Canada production of Broadway's show Rent. She was the first artist to be signed with Hidden Beach Recordings.
